My Vormator

Thursday, January 25th, 2007

Vormator is a project where you are given eight specific shapes with which to create a work of art. The people in charge of the project are hoping to publish the best of these works in a coffee table book. (Submissions are now closed).

These were the rules for the shapes:

  1. You’re allowed to rotate, flip and duplicate the Elements
  2. You are not obliged to use all the Elements
  3. Scaling is allowed, but only proportionally, so no skewing or free transform
  4. You can add, subtract, intersect and group elements as you see fit
  5. The use of colour is unrestricted, you can create your own colour schemes
  6. You are allowed to use gradients
  7. The Elements may only be filled, the use of strokes is not allowed
  8. You are not allowed to use filters or effects (e.g. drop shadows)

And here is what I came up with:

It was a lot of fun to be constrained and just play around until I came up with something. I can’t wait to see what others have done.

Here’s are the eight shapes:

The Doggy I forget to mention this when it first launched - but Joe is on the front page of Alexa as an example of image search. Go Joe!

Children of Men

Monday, January 15th, 2007

When I first saw the movie poster and read the description, I thought the movie sounded a little dumb. Then Steve and I went to see it this past weekend based on some of the ratings we found - and we were not disappointed.

The movie was *excellent*. I loved the story, the directing, the acting, the great shots throughout, and most of all the subtlety. Alfonso Cuarón (director) managed to tell the viewer quite a lot by using small things in the background, without saying a word outright. That shows me that he respects us as viewers and that he knows we can pick up on such things.

Steve noticed that one of the scenes towards the end was a really long continuous shot. I need to see the movie again just to find out how long it was. I wonder if Cuarón was going for a record or something? Anyway, after he brought it to my attention and I thought back on it, I was very impressed.

Cuarón and Sexton (co-writer) really thought through a lot of things and totally captured human reactions and responses. I don’t think there were any unbelievable parts in the movie, and it was full of touching moments.

I highly recommend you catch this movie, in the theater if you can.

Sweet Little Joe

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007

This past weekend we went snowboarding and skiing up in Tahoe. Needless to say I am very sore now! Anyway, on the way there we stopped in Sacramento to visit our friends Mike & Meg (M&M). They’re at the half way point and they offered to watch Joe while we ski-boarded, so we spent Friday night at their place.

On the way to Tahoe Saturday we ended up on a road that was covered heavily in snow, and opted not to continue on that road. We turned back and went straight to the hotel. Sunday we hit the slopes, and boy was I rusty.

After a tiring day we headed back to M&M’s. Again, they were more than hospitable. They fed us some dinner and told us all about their adventures with Joe. They took him for a long walk; he jumped over the back of the couch, and promptly waited to be told to get off; and he slept in the bed we slept in the night before, as opposed to sleeping with them (which is what we thought he would do). And that is the part of my story that is so sweet. The little guy missed us so much, he needed to sleep where we did. Aww :)

Hello Paris!

Monday, January 8th, 2007

Today it has been made official. I just purchased our tickets to Paris, France. We’re going in May with our friends Rebecca and Orion. And May can’t come soon enough now!! Woo hoo!!! This will be my first trip to another country (aside from Canada, which I don’t think really counts). I am sooooo excited - in case you can’t tell :)
