This was the beautiful view on my way home from work yesterday. A little more colorful than usual, but it’s just about this nice every night. Once again, love this place!

Steve’s dad is in town and the last three days we’ve been doing a little sightseeing. Saturday we hung out in North Beach and just went from place to place snacking and drinking. Sunday we went to Muir Woods and Napa. And Monday we saw the seals of Pier 39 and Alcatraz, firsts for both Steve and I. It feels very cool to sightsee at home, when home is San Francisco and the Bay Area *grin*

Since I’ve had my dog he’s been a little over weight and not very energetic. I fed him diet dog food – the proper portions – and he’s only lost a little weight. He was never much for playing, and when he did it was only for extremely short bouts.

This past week Joe was sick a couple of times and Steve suggested taking him to the vet, because he was also a little lathargic (more than usual). So I took him and the vet did some blood work. As it turns out, Joe has a low thyroid problem. The symptoms describe him to a T!

Thyroid is a disease, not something that can be cured. The vet says I can give him medication that will hopefully make him spunkier. If the mediation works it means that I will be giving him two pills a day for the rest of his life. A small price to pay for a spunkier, healthier, happier dog. I picked it up today, so we’ll see how it affects him.

I just watched an amazing show on Animal Planet, “Jane Goodall: When Animals Talk.” Most of the stories are astounding, about how animals communicate with us. One of the stories that I think is especially neat, is about rats sniffing out landmines in Africa. They’ve been trained to sniff out the TNT and scratch at the ground where they’ve found it. They don’t set off the mines because at 3 pounds they are not heavy enough, though they are larger than your average rat. Really fascinating stuff.

I found this really cool web site, where you sign up and every Friday they send you a topic to illustrate. You can then post a link to your illustrations on their site. This may be just what I need to get a little more motivated…
